The architecture of identity. The nonexistent space between personal and political. The conflict between what is expected and what is real. .noncompliant. makes techno while thinking about all of these things and sometimes just existing in them. Somewhere between these ideas and the listener exists the music. Make of it what you will.

On her Detroit Underground debut, .noncompliant. sets the tone with “Airless Spaces”, a menacing drone constructed from guest musician Matt Pagan’s guitar riffs run through a synth and mangled into a formless tension befitting the book from which it takes its name.

“Nolite Te Bastardes Carborundorum”, an ode to The Handmaid’s Tale and other dystopian notions, storms in with woozy spiraling synth echoes, teasing in classic stabs amidst smashing percussion, while Annie Hall’s remix deals in atmospheric echoes and a broken industrial stomp, turning the mood darker and more desperate.

Finally, “Ailed/Delia” builds on a wandering melodic synth, segueing into a more urgent counterpoint pushing the song forward, until Delia speaks, the subtextual conflict finally given a human voice.

.noncompliant. is about surviving in the world and making loud noises to understand and celebrate it.
